Bottled Up ceramic vessel by Aman Khanna.
Bottled Up is the latest design in Khanna's anthropomorphic Claymen series. This family of ceramic sculptures explores the nature of identity, selfhood and what it means to be human in the world.
Each hand-sculpted vessel stands on four legs and is sealed with a cork. The tapering cap for each vessel features the distinctive facial features that Khanna creates with a deft and minimal hand. The resulting vessel is at once functional and expressive, possessed of an appealing sense of character.
Whether used as a single decorative ornament or aranged in a crowd, these ceramic vessels have a compelling presence that encourages thoughtful consideration.
The use of unadorned clay bears particular significance for the artist. Khanna notes that "clay is a simple, everyday raw material used by everyone. Sun dried, half-baked in an open fire - clay is omnipresent and yet individual in the way one uses it."
As Khanna observes, "Let the Claymen look at you, and use them to look at yourself."
