Brothers Colin and Desmond Rawson founded Hornsea Potteries in 1949, initially selling souvenirs at the beachside tourist trinkets. However, with diverse design inspirations, the pottery soon expanded to become the largest studio pottery worldwide. Despite being positioned outside the traditional ceramics centre in Staffordshire, Hornsea's innovative techniques and designs, influenced by the Rawson brothers' textile backgrounds, contributed to its widespread popularity and rapid growth. Hornsea has earned its place as a beloved and significant brand renowned for its timeless aesthetic.
