Aino-Maija Metsola and Sami Ruotsalainen

Aino-Maija Metsola (born 1983) is an Helsinki-based illustrator and designer. Since studying at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, she has gone on to design a variety of prints Marimekko. She says of her creative philiosphy "Process is important. My way of working is intuitive, meandering, and often pretty introverted. I want to do things I can stand behind."

Sami Ruotsalainen is a Finnish designer, living and working in Helsinki. He holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Among the most important works by Sami Ruotsalainen are his Oiva and In Good Company dishware designs for Marimekko, which are paired with images from Marimekko designer colleagues such as Maija Louekari. Sami usually begins designing at his own kitchen table with hand-drawn sketches and then takes the ideas to the computer if CAD images are needed. Sami has said, “If I weren’t a designer, I’d definitely be a chef or something else with food and table settings. Food – making it, enjoying it – and spending time with friends and family at the dinner table is the best.”

The duo have collaborated on the Marimekko weather diary series; a range of tableware for the home, including pots and plates. The collection explores seasonal changes in weather and their influence on the rhythm of people's lives.
