140 years of Kingston School of Art

2015 marks 140 years of Kingston School of Art. The institution can be credited with many significant alumni including Archibold Knox, Gavin Turk, Jasper Morrison and William Plunkett.

140 years of Kingston School of Art

Charting key events in the art school’s history, as well as the varied disciplines and practices, taught including fine art, architecture, interior and furniture design, the curated exhibition features over 150 art and design works loaned from museums and private collections. Included in the showcase is the licensed production of William Plunkett’s Kingston chair, on loan from twentytwentyone.

The Kingston range, launched in 1967, was conceived as a family of seating designs sharing common components. Both modular in appearance and in manufacture, the collection offered great flexibility to both domestic and commercial interiors.

William Plunkett supplied Kingston to several important interiors projects, including the QE2. It was used Russell and Bromley shoe stores across the UK and exhibited at the Design Centre in Mayfair. The current production includes sofa, chair and daybed/bench. William Plunkett also designed the celebrated, minimal Reigate rocking chair; a design held in the V&A permanent collection. View all designs in the collection here.
