The Essence of Japanese Design

twentytwentyone are partnering Phaidon to celebrate the launch of their new book, WA: The Essence of Japanese Design.

The Essence of Japanese Design

Written by Rossella Menegazzo and Stefania Piotti, the book explores the diversity of materials and philosophies particular to contemporary Japanese design. The research is shown through a beautifully produced book depicting over 250 key objects. A cultural and highly sensitive approach is adopted in the creation of all areas of Japanese design. An acute understanding for materials, craftsmanship and form combine to produce a ‘Japaneseness’ that can be readily identified.

To coincide with the publication, twentytwentyone have curated an exhibition of Japanese design that embraces classics from the twentieth century through to recently launched contemporary designs. Works from luminaries such as Sori Yanagi, Isamu Noguchi and Issey Miyake are seen in the context of their contemporaries including Naoto Fukasawa and Nendo.

twentytwentyone will also show designs from a younger group of designers, with the overview completed with traditional craftmanship by un-named makers.

The exhibition features furniture, lighting, and homewares, reflecting content from the new Phaidon book. An extensive range of materials is displayed including timber, cast iron, porcelain, paper, steel, brass and straw.
