Robin Day is Britain’s most renowned modern furniture designer. Having won the Museum of Modern Art’s Low Cost Furniture Competition in 1948, he went on to design an exceptionally wide-ranging, innovative and distinguished body of work in a career spanning more than 60 years.
Combining an acute understanding of materials and manufacturing processes with progressive design skills, he created landmarks in the history of furniture design. His polypropylene seating is believed to be the world’s best-selling chair.
Robin Day’s achievements are not restricted to furniture; his exhibition, industrial, graphic and interior designs demonstrated a modernist sensibility expressed with distinctive flair. Robin and his wife, the textile designer Lucienne Day, are revered for the essential part they played in bringing contemporary design to Britain after the War.
