400 armchairs by Alvar Aalto for Artek.

The 400 armchair is perhaps Aalto’s most authoritative seating design. Utilising the construction and principles employed in his other cantilevered chairs from this period, the bold, wide armrests and deep seat suggest a sense of power and comfort.

Known also as the Tank, the wide laminated side elements echo the tracks and strength of a military vehicle. The traditional coil-sprung seat and back provide high levels of comfort whilst the mass appears to float by virtue of the cantilever.

The structural form is technically advanced and combined with the upholstered seat unit the chair has always been a costly construction. As such, period examples of the Tank are rare.

At some time this pre-war pair have been subject to repairs and the frame has been refixed to the seat and redowelled.

They are structurally sound though, as with most Aalto chairs from this period, there has been movement and a little twisting in the cantilevered frame.
