Alvar Aalto was one of the founders of Artek and he is recognised today as one of the great masters of modern architecture. Alvar Aalto began designing furnishings as a natural and important extension of his architectural thinking. A spokesman for the modernist movement, he was also known for his experimental approach to bending wood, which can be seen with the armchair 400 design.
Made in Finland by Artek, the armchair 400 (also known as the Tank armchair) was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936. This classic chair was designed for the Milan Triennale.
The sculptural armchair features a sturdy seat and wide armrests. The bent plywood cantilevered framework flexes to offer a comfortable seating experience and gives the chair its characteristic appearance. A supportive sit is created by the combination of zigzag springs, polyurethane foam and polyester wadding.
Available with natural or black lacquered birch armrests.
Upholstered in a range of fabrics and leathers. For information about the fabric and leather range available on this item please see the downloadable specification sheet.
