Booth and Ledeboer cabinet for Gordon Russell Ltd, 1951.
The cabinet by David Booth and Judith Ledeboer captures simple British modernism with a subtle decorative quality. The high quality construction by Gordon Russell Ltd employs exotic hardwoods including mahogany and veneers in Bombay rosewood.
The rosewood veneer is cut to reveal the white birch beneath in an evocative double helix pattern reflecting topical interest with scientific and atomic structures.
This design was displayed at the Festival of Britain in the ‘Home and Gardens’ building. It proved to be an iconic reference for the period, a later version by the designers appearing as a motif on the Homemaker range of plates and dinnerware.
An example of the design is in the V&A permanent collection.
