Little Sun is an innovative solar light source emerging from a collaboration between artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen. The Little Sun project aims to increase access to affordable and sustainable light in parts of the world where there is no electricity supply.
Each purchase of a Little Sun light enables the distribution of the same light to an off-grid community in Africa at an affordable price. Importantly, Little Sun's social enterprise model means that instead of simply handing out the lights to communities in need, it trains local people to set up their own distribution systems and in this way nurtures small businesses.
The Little Sun light incorporates the world's most efficient solar cell and has two light levels. After 5 hours of charging the light can generate 10 hours of soft light or 4 hours of bright light. The case has been designed to prevent the electronics within from overheating when charging in direct sunlight and to ventilate the solar cell in order to maintain its efficiency.
To charge, place Little Sun in the sunlight with the cell facing upwards.
Press the white button once for soft light and twice for bright light. A third press will turn the light off.
Little Sun has been added to the permanent design collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and was nominated for the London Design Museum's Designs of the Year Award.
Light contains 3x AAA rechargeable batteries.
