Alvar Aalto Chair 45, 1945
Chair 45 by Alvar Aalto
The design for Chair 45 symbolises Aalto’s quest to continue to develop new typographies within his furniture. The frame and leg are constructed in laminated birch and together accentuate a solidity with pronounced depth to seat and back. The armchair was conceived to provide a long sitting position with comfort afforded through the deeply upholstered seat.
The chair offered has the distinctive quilted covered designed by Aalto to create a level of lightness and transparency, whilst being more luxurious than the standard linen webbing available in this design and other chairs such as the stacking 611.
The wide armrests are another strong gesture towards ergonomics and are boldly wrapped in a vinyl covered cord to provide a comfortable and tactile surface.
Aalto frequently used such coverings to wrap architectural elements such as columns and bannisters in cane or leather, and his floor lights also featured wrapped stands.
As with many Aalto designs the Chair 45 was considered part of a family to suit a host of needs and environments. The individual design could be dressed in a range of upholstery types, or the open seat frame left exposed with cane, webbing or vinyl upholstery treatments.
Note: Price is for a single 45 chair. Pair available.
