620 armchair by Dieter Rams for Vitsoe
The 620 chair programme was conceived as an entirely rational and modular design that allowed armchairs to extend to become sofas. Components were interchangeable and a versatile seating landscape could be created from a limited palette of options.
The construction of the furniture utilised high-quality materials and techniques. The seat base was sprung in a traditional manner, with loose feather cushions upholstered in fine aniline leather. The frame shell was made from white lacquered moulded fiberglass-type composite.
The construction is evident and fixings are boldly part of the design aesthetic dictating the design language.
As with his 606 shelving, the seating range by Dieter Rams is a carefully considered collection of components that may be specified to suit user needs.
The 620 remains in production, made to the same exacting standards as the original manufacture.
