Eames Softpad lounge chair

Eames Softpad lounge chairs, EA216.

The design of the Soft Pad Group dates from 1969. In terms of both construction and shape, these chairs are similar to the design of the Aluminium Group conceived in 1958, however the additional cushions were introduced to provide and increased level of comfort. The two families share the same striking silhouette and are constructed in an identical way. The Eames’ rejected the principle of a seat shell in favour of stretching the upholstery between two aluminium side profiles. The fabric or leather is seamlessly fixed within the side members and held taut between the frames with aluminium stretchers. The innovative design provides a highly simplified aesthetic whilst providing comfort and functionality across a range of seat options.

Charles & Ray Eames are considered the most important figures in twentieth century design. They excelled in the fields of furniture design, film-making, photography and exhibition design.
