Isokon Stool table , 1960
Isokon Stool table designed by Isokon in 1933.
The Isokon Stool formed part of a small collection of modernist furniture produced by the firm Jack Pritchard set up in 1931. Both Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer acted as design directors for Isokon, whilst Laszlo Moholy-Nagy designed the logo and promotional material.
Although the design for the Isokon stool is not attributed to a single designer, it is believed that Gropius authorised its production. The thin plywood was imported from sources Pritchard had in Estonia. The stool was available with an option tray top to convert to side table.
The Isokon Building (Lawn Road Flats) was designed by Wells Coates and the stools were used in the Isobar, which was designed by Marcel Breuer. The flats were home to a creative network of designers, artists and writers and the Isobar was frequented by Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson.
Unfortunately, Isokon was not a commercial success and the onset of WW2 interrupted supply of plywood and the company struggled to grow in the postwar period. The design was resurrected when Isokon Plus took on the license in 1982.
