Rooted in a painstaking analysis of the reflective qualities of light, Poul Henningsen's PH 5 light is recognised as a classic of Danish design and is notable for its innovative glare-free form and uniform illumination.
Henningsen developed the PH 5 pendant light in 1958 in response to constant changes to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers. The light derives its name from the 50cm diameter of the shade. Irrespective of how the light is installed or the light source used, the PH 5 is completely glare-free, due to Henningsen's ingenious three-shade system.
The integration of a red cone and a coloured reflector inside the shade also generates a warmer tone of light by subduing the green-yellow light generated (human eyes are most sensitive to this region of the spectrum).

Materials
The shade and reflectors are made of spun aluminium, with rolled aluminium struts.
The PH 5 is available in eight standard colour combinations which feature the main colour and a contrasting shade applied to the underside of the internal anti-glare disc. These are:
Classic white (with blue anti-glare disk) or Modern white (rose anti-glare disc), Matt powder coated. Hues of Blue (red anti-glare disc), Hues of Green (red anti-glare disc), Hues of Grey (rose anti-glare disc), Hues of Orange (blue anti-glare disc), Hues of Red (green anti-glare disc), Hues of Rose (green anti-glare disc), Matt wet painted, Copper, or in Brass.
The 'Hues of...' colourways were introduced by Louis Poulsen in 2018 to mark the 60th anniversary of this remarkable light.
To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the PH5 in 2008, a new range of gloss finish colours was introduced.
