Robin Day, Chevron chair, 1959

Chevron chair by Robin Day for Hille, 1959.

The Chevron chair typifies Robin Day’s rational approach to furniture design. A simple, solid mahogany frame is supported by twin stove-enamelled legs. The steel A-frame is purposefully fixed to the exterior of the wooden seat frame. The rubber support webbing to seat and back are also exposed. The design illustrates an integrity and desire to leave the structure undisguised.

As with many of Robin Day’s most important designs the elements of the design construction are revealed. This was a highly progressive approach to furniture design, as typically furniture from the period would have been traditional typographies with structural elements clothed in upholstery.

The Chevron chair is a visually lightweight, compact and well-proportioned design, offering good comfort levels as well as a modernist aesthetic. The design extended to include an armchair version.
