Skrindan armchairs - pair, 1955

Skrindan armchairs - pair, Kerstin Hörlin-Holmqvist, c.1955

The Skrindan chair fuses historical references with an individual expression that reflects the quality of designs by Kerstin Hörlin-Holmqvist. The elegant beech frame supports generous upholstery and shows subtle detailing to the swagged rear leg and turned arms. The design is neither overtly modern, nor entirely classical, but intended to work in respect of an interior that could be either, or both.

Skrindan were produced by OPE, Sweden (Olof Person, Jönköping), who were a firm of furniture makers renowned for the Seal collection by IB Kofod Larsen.

Holmquist studied art history in England from 1946-47, returning to her native Sweden to continue postgraduate architecture at Konstfack.

Working alongside her husband on architectural projects and independently of furniture design, Kerstin Holmquist became a respected furniture and textile designer. Her partnership esteemed department store NK Sweden was extremely productive lasting from 1952 through to 1964.

Her ‘Paradis’ collection of sofas and armchairs is recognised as a classic and has recently been reissued under license.

"I think both furniture and textiles, wherever they end up, must be kind, gentle and courteous, but without losing their character. They should have human qualities, not be pompous and only stand alone, but able to adapt to the environment they end up in..."
