Furniture by Charles and Ray Eames, 1997

One of the first exhibitions conceived by twentytwentyone provided an overview of furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eames.

Rare vintage designs were sourced to bring together an authoritative appraisal of their works, some of which had never been exported into Europe during their production period.

The exhibition marked the beginning of a close relationship with European license-holder Vitra, who loaned La Chaise.

We were also honoured to welcome Rolf Felhbaum as a visitor. The Vitra MD and owner of course shared a similar passion for the pioneering designers' work and was intrigued to see the emerging appreciation for Eames designs in the UK.

Although the Eames name has now become a shorthand for mid-century design, it was considerably less well known at the time of this exhibition and the duo were regularly referred to as the Eames brothers.

Shown above, the catalogue produced for the exhibition. The catalogue in its entireity can be viewed here.

A series of postcards produced by twentytwentyone in association with the exhibition are shown below. The cards featured iconic Eames designs in silhouette against a backdrop of a close-up of various materials used in their construction.
