Hillestak chair by Robin Day for Hille, 1950.

Proposed as a low-cost stacking chair and inspired by the plywood work of Aalto and Eames, Robin Day’s design proved to be one of Hille’s early successes.

Utilising formed plywood for the seat, back and spine, the Hillestak offered comfort and functionality. The leg design provided for efficient stacking capability with an entirely vertical stack profile.

The design allowed for the seat and back to be upholstered and the Hillestak found success in both domestic and commercial interiors.

The chair became part of a family of designs with table, desk and side table joining the chair and sharing the A-frame leg.

One of the first designs by Day for Hille, the modernist design marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.
