The now iconic Domus Chair in 1946 was created as a multipurpose seat for the Domus Academica student housing complex in Helsinki.
The pressed birch plywood seat and back were shaped to provide students comfort, while the stackable solid birch frame meant it could save space in hallways, conference rooms and auditoriums.
As Jukka Savolainen, director of Helsinki Design Museum explained "Tapiovaara wanted good design for everyone. He did Ikea before Ikea, good quality pieces at an affordable price – the same kind of packaging and mass production ideas as Ikea has done."
Available in a range of finishes: natural lacquered, black stained, honey stained or white stained birch, or natural lacquered oak.
Upholstered version also available, please enquire for details.
