Slatted Bench, 1954

Slatted Bench by Robin Day for twentytwentyone.

The Slatted Bench was designed for Hille and first launched at the Milan Triennale in 1954. This simple construction of solid wood slats supported by a steel rod frame married the honesty of a natural material with man-made forged metal.

In addition to serving as a bench or low table, this multi-functional design was conceived to work as a modular, flexible base for Day's storage cabinets from the Interplan range. As ever, Day was concerned with issues of practicality and functionality in the modern home, observing: "what one needs in today's small rooms is to see over and under one's furniture."

Now reissued by twentytwentyone in a production licensed by The Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation, the exemplary modernist design language and functionality of Day's design can now be appreciated by a new generation of users.

The Slatted Bench is part of the Robin Day Collection®  made by twentytwentyone under licence from the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation.

The walnut used is sourced and worked by Isokon with final assembly carried out in their London workshops. As for the original, the Slatted bench is made entirely in the UK.

The Slatted Bench features solid walnut slats and may be used as a media bench for television or audio equipment. The addition of cushions transforms it into a low seat.

Honouring the working relationship between Robin Day and textile designer Gerd Hay-Edie, twentytwentyone have collaborated with Mourne Textiles (the family-run weaving workshop founded by Hay-Edie) to produce a Mourne cushion for the Slatted Bench.
