In 1927 French inventor Julien-Henri Porché started to design furniture made entirely from metal, for use in public spaces such as restaurants and cafés. The designer became famous for creating chairs that were both functional yet graceful and light. The innovative and stackable Surpil chair, a precursor in its use of modernist lines, is similar to the furniture that came out of Germany as part of the Bauhaus movement.
