Table desk by Poul Kjaerholm.
Rare desk from the School of Architects at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts., Copenhagen, manufactured by Rud Rasmussen.
Poul Kjerholm was commissioned in 1955 to design several pieces of furniture for the esteemed faculty. The resultant designs included two sizes of desk and a chest to house drawings.
The site-specific furniture all employed Oregon pine veneer in conjunction with a lapped steel frame. The table tops were not fixed and were elevated from the steel structure to create a similarly planar elevation to that of the base. The majority of the frames for the School of Architects were finished in a black paint finish, and others in a grey colour.
The commission came in the same year that Kjerholm launched the PK22 which is now considered the masterpiece of his small but significant output of designs.
Poul Kajerholm’s work is represented in numerous museums including MOMA and the V&A and he won two Grand Prix medals at the Milan Triennale. His designs are characterised by an acute attention to detail married with understated elegance. Kjaerholm created timeless and functional designs which remain landmarks in the history of modern furniture.
