Reclining chair by Robin Day, Centenary Edition by Kenneth Grange.
To celebrate the centenary of Robin Day's birth, twentytwentyone has collaborated with a select group of designers to compose an editorial of one of his most enduring furniture designs.
Kenneth Grange comments: "Lucienne and Robin were close friends for decades. We never worked together but holidayed regularly. On a skiing holiday I agreed to go along with Robin and his friend Alan Blackshaw - on the strict condition that there would be none of his loony climbing, ropes and axes...
A few hours later we were on a ridge at the top of the world and Robin said, 'Maybe we should rope up. Do you know what to do if one of us should fall over the edge?' 'No,' I answered. He replied, 'It's important that you jump off the other side!'
For the chair, I felt some pattern would work. My interest in Ageless Design advocates design that the young enjoy for their own reasons and their elders for theirs. Neither may realise this. But a patterned fabric appeals to both."
Grange has paid tribute to Day by covering the Reclining chair in Wrekin fabric, designed by Eleanor Pritchard and woven in Scotland on Isle of Bute. The design is named after a transmitter mast in Shropshire.
The textile has two faces and is characteristic of the designer's pared-back approach to geometric pattern. Face A (blue black with a white accent) has been used.
The Reclining chair was originally designed in 1952 and was considered by Robin Day to be one of his most successful and iconic designs. The high comfort levels and clearly articulated structure fulfilled Day’s exacting design sensibilities. The modernist vocabulary of the Reclining chair encapsulates principles that were inherent in much of his wide body of work.
“A good design should fulfil its purpose well, be soundly constructed and should express in its design this purpose and construction.” Robin Day
