Ostergaard Steel-Line chair, 1968
The Steen Ostergaard Steel-Line chair pays homage to the Mies van de Rohe Barcelona chair with its elegant sweeping frame and loose leather cushions.
The stainless steel structure echoes the work of fellow Danes, Poul Kjaerholm and Fabricius-Kastholm. Ostergaard’s design is beautifully engineered and through the use of chromed steel straps to support the cushions he achieves a harmonious completeness to the chair. The aniline leather cushions are down-filled offering a high level of comfort, whilst providing a less structured element to the strict, minimalist frame. The whole combines to create an extremely high quality piece of furniture.
Steen Ostergaard trained as a cabinetmaker in 1957 and went on to train as an architect and industrial designer with design offices in Denmark, UK, Germany and France. In 1966 he designed the first injection moulded one-piece chair, and the A-Line series of chairs went on to be a highly successful commercial design.
His work has been highly awarded and widely exhibited, and designs are held in Museum of Art and Design, Copenhagen.
