Siment Metro concrete vase by Tiipoi.
Siment is a collection of planters and vases inspired by the concrete infrastructure of urban India. The collection consists of three mini planters, based on Indian water towers, and two larger vases based on the pillars that support the metro systems, and motorway flyovers of urban India.
Siment miniaturises functional and architectural features like pipework, ladders, and stairs, rendering them into decorative elements.
The designs in miniature were 3D printed, with silicone molds made from the prints and then cast in concrete.
India’s relationship with concrete began with the infrastructural buildings of the Public Works Department in the early 1920s. From there it has seen Modernism with Le Corbusier’s design for Chandigarh, through the boom years of the 1990s where large urban redevelopment took place. Concrete has almost always been the material of choice, yet it’s greyness, plainness, and uniformity can sometimes sit at odds with India’s tendency towards vibrancy, and decoration.
