Hand cork stop by Carl Auböck for Werkstätte Carl Auböck..

Carl Auböck is today recognised as one of the leading lights of Viennese modernism. Inheriting his father's metal-working business, he proceeded to bring a distinctive new modern sensibility to the traditional bronze figures known as Wiener Bronzen (collectible trinkets and souvenirs, often in the form of animals).

Exquisitely made, profoundly tactile and often evincing a whimsical humour, Auböck's designs of the 1940s and 50s were to become much sought-after cult objects, collected by modernist luminaries such as Walter Gropius and Charles and Ray Eames.

The Hand cork stop has all of the hallmarks of an Auböck design: beautifully crafted, a delight to hold and possessed of an almost surrealist humour. A hand cast in solid brass serves as a handle for a cork stopper to extend the life of an opened bottle of wine.

Handmade in Austria in the family-run Werkstätte Carl Auböck.
