Ilse Crawford
Ilse Crawford, born in 1962, is a renowned British interior and furniture designer whose work bridges the worlds of design and architecture. Though she initially trained as a historian at Bedford College in London, she was heavily influenced by her creative upbringing. Crawford began her career working at an architecture firm, before becoming the launch editor of Elle Decoration UK. Under her leadership, the magazine flourished, becoming a key voice in shaping contemporary design.
In 2003, Crawford founded Studioilse, a London-based design practice driven by the belief that interiors should not only look good but also feel good. Her studio’s work spans private residences, hotels, workspaces, and product design.
Crawford’s contributions to design have earned her formal recognition: she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2014, and later elevated to Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2021 for her services to design.
As The New York Times aptly put it, “Crawford doesn’t have a signature style, but a signature feeling: emotional and deeply rooted to the place.”
