Our Edit ’17 exhibition for this year’s London Design Festival opened on the evening of Tuesday 19th September, celebrating a diverse selection of classic and contemporary designs.
Edit ’17 marks the UK launch of new works by Michael Anastassiades and Richard Woods/Sebastian Wrong alongside relaunched historical designs by Robin Day and Friso Kramer/Wim Rietveld.
Designed in 1954, Robin Day’s Slatted Bench has been reissued by twentytwentyone in a new production licensed by the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation.
This elegantly multifunctional low bench was originally conceived as a modular base for storage cabinets, fulfilling Day’s dictum that “what one needs in today’s small rooms is to see over and under one’s furniture.”
A range of cushions produced for the Slatted Bench by Mourne Textiles – also on display – honour the productive working relationship between Day and Gerd Hay-Edie, textile designer and founder of Mourne Textiles.
Michael Anastassiades’ Mobile chandelier 13 is an arresting presence in our exhibition space, continuing the designer’s trademark exploration of sculptural forms held in balance.
The cursive form of the Mobile chandelier 13 is counterpointed by Anastassiades’ Brass Architectural Collection pendant series.
This refined family of lights distils the pendant to its essential elements, with opaline glass globes in a variety of sizes suspended from a minimal brass rod.
Edit ’17 marks the UK launch of Hay’s new production of the Result and Pyramid collection of chairs, tables and benches. These classics of midcentury Dutch design were developed by Friso Kramer and Wim Rietveld for Ahrend in the late 1950s.
Technically innovative, lightweight, durable and adaptable, the Result chair and Pyramid tables and benches were widely used in Netherlands school and university buildings throughout the 1960s and 70s, and have now been reissued by Hay to be enjoyed by a new generation of design enthusiasts.
Richard Woods and Sebastian Wrong’s Wrongwoods table for Established & Sons offers a contrasting but no less compelling design approach.
The artist and designer celebrate ten years of collaboration by returning to the first Wrongwoods design they prototyped. Available in the new Palm Springs colourway, the Wrongwoods table sees contemporary art brought into everyday use as a functional piece of furniture.
Edit ’17 is open to the public at our River Street showroom until 24th September, as part of the Islington Design District.
