twentytwentyone have marked the relaunch of the 1954 Slatted Bench by Robin Day with a collaboration with Mourne Textiles, honouring the close working relationship between Day and noted textiles designer and founder of Mourne Textiles, Gerd Hay-Edie.
Hay-Edie started to work with Robin Day in 1951 and her rugs formed part of designs that were recognised with a silver medal at La Triennale de Milano. Her woven textiles were used throughout Hille productions in the early 1950s and the productive relationship continued for a decade.
twentytwentyone have returned to one of the very first textiles that Hay-Edie presented to Hille. Mourne Check is a durable linen, wool and cotton mix and is handwoven on the traditional looms first introduced to the Mourne workshops in the 1950s.
Four colours have been selected and matched from original heritage palettes in the Mourne archive: Cloud, Granite, Gorse and Tollymore.
The cushion design echoes those seen in historical images from the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation photographic archive, with zipped covers and plain seam.
The Mourne cushion is on display with the Slatted Bench at our River Street showroom as part of our Edit '17 exhibition for the 2017 London Design Festival.
