Franklin Road House

The twentytwentyone contracts team collaborated with New Zealand-based Jack McKinney Architects and interior designer Katie Lockhart on the Franklin Road House in Auckland to create a family home.

Franklin Road House

Interior designer Katie Lockhart and Jack McKinney Architects have transformed a traditional Edwardian villa in Ponsonby, Auckland. Unable to alter the exterior or roofline of the property due to heritage regulations, McKinney focused on extending and renovating the non-original areas.

“The result is very far from a typical Auckland villa alteration, but feels natural and calm, not strident and forced,” says McKinney.

The clients provided a spatial, rather than an aesthetic, brief with the desire to reference the work of architect Geoffrey Bawa after a recent trip to India.

With this in mind, Lockhart sought to expand upon the buildings sculptural space, paring warmth and minimalism through the use of tactile materials, including vintage Japanese textures, contemporary and custom-made pieces which are set against a palette inspired by Italian terracotta tiles.

The twentytwentyone Contracts team supplied a range of lighting to support the unique interior, including the Hotaru Double Bubble pendant light, the Glo-ball  and Mini Glo-Ball C/W wall lights as well as the A810 floor light.
