British Colour Standard

Established in 1931 and out of use since the 1950s, the British Colour Standard has been reinvigorated by the artistic and design partnership of Jackie Piper & Victoria Whitbread; a duo who share a deep passion for both colour and the exploration of materials. Their journey to resurrect this long-forgotten brand began when they stumbled upon an antiquated colour dictionary in an Oxfam shop.

Leveraging a digital colour reader, they meticulously established profiles for the extensive spectrum of colours originally conceived and documented in the 1930s. These authentic colours and their corresponding names now take centre stage in their contemporary collections.

Rooted in nature, drawing inspiration from flora, fauna, semi-precious stones, and spices, their primary collections encompass a wealth of historic and distinguished Royal colours created for significant events like coronations and special occasions.
