Nanna Ditzel

Nanna Ditzel (1923 - 2005) was a Danish furniture designer whose work responded to rapid developments in materials and industrial processes during the post-war era. As a result, Ditzel's designs cemented Denmark's reputation for innovative design, not least her iconic 'Hanging Egg' chair.

Born in 1923, Ditzel was designing at a time when new materials and processes were emerging. She embraced the challenge, producing experimental and innovative pieces in a wide array of materials including fibreglass, wicker and rubber. As well as furniture design, Ditzel worked across other disciplines, exploring jewellery, tableware, applied arts and textiles.

Prior to graduating as a furniture designer from the School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1946, Nanna Ditzel worked as a cabinet maker. Shortly after graduating, Ditzel founded her own design studio with Jørgen Ditzel. Despite working in a very male-dominated industry, Ditzel succeeded in becoming a highly successful, acclaimed designer, with a career spanning 60 years.

Her works are still in constant production to this day, with furniture ranges for Fredericia, Getama and Sika, textiles for Kvadrat and jewellery for Georg Jensen.
