Introducing | Mikado

At twentytwentyone, we’re proud to have a long-standing relationship with British design-duo Barber Osgerby, dating back to our store’s inception in 1996 and the launch of their iconic Loop Table.

We’re delighted to share Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby’s latest launch in collaboration with Vitra - Mikado.

‘Who wants to sit still forever?

We are human, and we need to be able to move to concentrate. Mikado rethinks this concept, offering comfort in a dynamic, sustainable way.’

- Edward Barber + Jay Osgerby

Available as both an armchair and side chair, the elegant design is characterised by its simple, yet sleek aesthetic and exceptional comfort provided by its enveloping curved and tilting backrest. Discreetly hidden beneath the chair’s plush upholstery is an innovative mechanism which allows the chair back to gently recline, flexing with the sitter's movements.

This simple yet profound design feature brings ergonomic comfort usually associated with task chairs into a new landscape, enabling active, extended periods of sitting – whether at home, in the office or out dining.

“We’re not people who generally sit still, we fidget, we move, we stand up we sit down, and that goes for everybody, we're not static.”

- Jay Osgerby

Mikado’s pared-back form is amplified with a diverse selection of fabric or leather upholstery options and base finishes, enabling a versatile customisation to suit any interior.

Sustainability is at the heart of this new, fully upholstered chair design. Each individual component can be replaced, extending the lifespan of the design, to suit evolving preferences, surroundings or through use. The seat covers are easily removable for cleaning or replacement, as are the chair legs.

All of the components are sourced in Europe, mainly Germany and Italy, the covers sewn in Hungary and the chair upholstery and assembly is carried out at the Vitra campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Most of the components are crafted from recycled materials and the chair is constructed without the use of glue, which enables the design to be entirely dissembled and recycled at end of life.

“We’ve managed to combine some of the technological expertise of Vitra with a simplicity of form which is what we try to strive for.”

- Ed Barber

The newly launched Mikado armchair is on display at our River Street showroom.
