Giancarlo Mattioli
Giancarlo Mattioli was an Italian designer, popular in the 1950s and 60s for his work in urban planning, architecture and portraits. After studying architecture in Florence, he founded the Urban Architects Group “Città Nuova” alongside Pierluigi Cervellati, Umberto Maccaferri, Franco Morelli, Gianpaolo Mazzucato, and Mario Zaffagnini.
In 1965, the Urban Architects Group submitted a jellyfish shaped lamp for the "Studio Artemide Domus di Milano" competition to find new lighting solutions. The project successfully won and was manufactured by Artemide, under the title "Nesso". Even today, Nesso remails a symbolic lamp, being part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York.
