Paavo Tynell

The Finnish industrial designer Paavo Tynell was born in 1890. His lighting designs gave him the title “the man who illuminated Finland”. 

He was the head designer of Taito Oy, the first industrial lighting company in Finland. His profile increasing across Europe after collaborations with modernist architects, including Alvar Aalto. Tynell created lighting designs fir Aalto's Paimio Sanatorium and the Viipuri Library projects. Tynell later went on to work for Finland House, a New York atelier. 

His designs combined the heritage of Finnish designs with modern materials and construction. His modern lighting designs, distinctly Scandinavian through a connection to nature.
