Eames Fiberglass LAR Armchair

Eames Fiberglass LAR Armchair by Charles + Ray Eames for Vitra.

Designed in 1950, the Eames Fiberglass LAR chair is the result of the Charles and Ray Eames entry to the 'International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design' organised by the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1948. The shell of the chair was moulded to fit the contours of the human body and featured a variety of bases. The design was too complex for mass production due to material limitations.

This led to them using glass-fibre reinforced polyester resin, which until then had been primarily restricted to military applications such as aircraft radomes and cockpit covers.  The LAR armchair features dyed-through, glass-fiber reinforced polyester (fiberglass) similar to the earliest models. The base features a wire base with cross struts available in chrome-plated or powder-coated finish.

LAR stands for Lounge Height Armchair with Rod Base.
