Butterfly Stool

Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi for Vitra.

One of the most iconic designs of the 20th century, the Butterfly Stool merges a uniquely Japanese aesthetic with a plywood moulding technique pioneered by Charles and Ray Eames in the late 1940s.

Designed in 1956, the stool’s minimalist design reflects the influence of the Japanese Mingei movement from the early 20th century, a movement championed by Yanagi's father, while the use of moulded plywood highlights a connection to the modern European and American design movements.

Yanagi adapted the Western stool design, blending it with shapes inspired by Japanese architecture, such as the arches of Shinto shrines, and the fluid lines of Japanese calligraphy. The result is a seat with a gracefully curved form that evokes the wings of a butterfly.
